Chic Shopper Chick Giveaway: Ugly Dolls

This contest has now ended. Please check out our contest page for our current contests and giveaways.

Is it bad to start a review by saying that the product is just down right UGLY? Because really, they are. But they are so ugly they're actually cute! Of course, I'm talking about none other than the Ugly Dolls, those amazingly soft and plush figures that are eternally popular with celebrities and us common folk alike. Christina Aguilera has them in her son's room, and they are certainly beginning to replace the firetrucks and airplane motif for little boys rooms the world over.

I have to admit, when I pulled my first Ugly Doll out of the box, I was skeptical. It was odd looking, and perhaps a bit frightening. That is until Little AG in all of her 17 month old glory, cruised on by and snatched little Poe out of my hands, immediately collapsing onto the ground in a giant hug with him. After a bit of patting him on the back and petting him, she hopped back up, stuck his wing in her mouth, and continued to bop around the house, all with Poe by her side.

So now I'm hooked. If you had seen that same adorable display, you would be too.

Ugly Dolls are the brain child of the creative husband and wife team of artists David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim. Ugly Dolls began as a drawing of a playful orange character known as Wage. Eventually Sun-Min sewed Wage into a plush figure as a surprise for David, and the rest is history. Since then, there have been many new characters and Ugly Dolls and have since turned the Uglyverse upside down!

So what do you think? Ugly or cute? I can't decide, but I do know that either way, I like em'!!

Win it! I am giving away one Ugly Doll in Original Size to THREE different Chic Shopper Chick readers. I have one Poe, one Gato Deluxe, and one Peaco to giveaway. To enter, follow the directions below.

I had a Mrs. Beasley doll that was my favorite. It was the same doll that the little girl carried around on the show Family Affair. (For you young folks, it was on in the early 70's). I would choose Paeco if I won.

I think uglydolls are SO supercute! When I was little, I had a stuffed dog named "Perdy" cause when I was three I thought dogs made a purring sound. I would choose Peaco, though any ugly doll would have my love.

My favorite stuffed toy was this huge koala I had when I was little. I had to leave at my grannies house when we moved away, my mom said I could bring it when we went back that following summer. When we got back to New York to my shock and horror my cousins destroyed my bear. I dont think I ever got over that:-( But now I enjoy collecting for my kids and I would love the Paeco for my daughter.

I still have my favorite babydoll from my childhood -- the hair is all cut off and there's crayon in her ears. It used to scare my daughter when she was really little!

I love the Peaco ugly doll -- it looks a little like our cross-eyed cat that likes to nip at our heels.

My favorite stuffed animal is a teddy bear that is now hanging together by threads. One of these days I might give him an overhaul.

I have a flat pillow-like stuffed animal named Sylvie. She's an elephant. She's in a shadow box now because she is kind of beat. She has an iodine stain from the hospital when I had hip surgery and the end of her trunk is chewed up (I use to chew on it). Poor girl. I still love her so!

I would pick Gato.

As a tot I idolized my older brother. When he brought a stuffed Garfield back from a trip and gave it to me, I was on cloud nine. "Garf" never left my side and despite all the misplacing, accidental washings, dog maulings, etc., I still have him.

All of the Ugly Dolls are adorable, but my fave has to be Ice Bat. :)

I don't remember what kind of doll she was, I'm sure she was some generic brand but I loved her nonetheless. I named her Curly (because of her blonde curls) and I lost her on a family camping trip. I was crushed. I LOVE these uglydolls and would be thrilled with any of them, although Poe might be my favorite.

This giveaway fits me perfectly! Haha, I am so into these kind of gifts! How unique and adorable is this?!? Props to you!

My favorite stuffed animal was this weird rabbit/monster. My grandpa had got it for me when I was younger for my Birthday right before he died. I was still a baby. Growing up, I held onto that thing like crazy...it went EVERYWHERE with me! To date, it is the only stuffed animal I still have. It was one of those that flips inside out, from a rabbit to this monster looking creature. It's very weird but that's why I like it! Not a stuffed animal out there like it! :]

Okay, don't want to write a book. My favorite Ugly Doll is Cuckanucka or Ox! Too cute.

Good luck to everyone!
Best wishes*

When I was little I actually had a blanket named mickey that I carried around, I even took it to the first day of 1st grade. It was a seafoam green knit blanket with satin around the edges that eventually all the satin came off and it had gum stuck to it and holes in it. I even have the blanket somewhere, in a box. I took it to school every day in pre-k and kindergarten, I kept it in my cubby hole or backpack!

I forgot to tell the story of how my blanket mickey got lost at a hotel in new orleans when I was little. We would drive to florida every summer from texas for our family summer vacation. on the way back, we would always hang out in new orleans for a few days. my family was staying at a hotel and I put my mickey down on the bed while we went to dinner. when we came back they had changed the sheets and mickey was gone. we told the front desk and they looked for him in the laundry but didnt find him. 3 days later we were packing the car up to leave and they came out to the car with mickey. it was so traumatizing, Ill never forget it. but i was so happy they found him. he almost got lost at a hotel in new orleans but to this day, I still have him.

I had a big, blue-gray teddy bear named Smoky that I'd won at a carnival. I was so proud of him because I'd never won anything before. He slept with me every night all the way through high school and I'd brush out his long fur to make him even softer.

After I left home, my mom gave him away to Goodwill. I was so sad.

My grandmother gave me a large stuffed lamb, that also happened to be a puppet. Ever the original child, I named it "Lamby." It was quite cute, but came with an attached bell that would ring all night as I slept with it. As a solution, we tied a giant sock around the bell to muffle the ringing (why we didn't detach the bell, I have no idea). Lamby was pretty silly looking and top heavy as a result. I particularly like Peaco, perhaps I could tie a sock around it's neck too!

My favorite toy as a child (and today) was the sock monkey that a neighbor made for me when I was born. That think went everywhere with me and I even kept it as I got older and married. It's now in a box in my closet. It just holds so many wonderful memories that I just can't part with it.

My favorite toy (lovey) was a teddy bear, and during my toddler years I pulled all the fur off the bear, so he is bald, but he was one very loved bear.

If I win I would love to have Poe, he is cute, in an odd sort of way.

I had an Ernie doll from Sesame Street, and it was sort of like a learning tool because you could work the buttons on his coat and the zippers and tie his shoes, things like that. It was my favorite, I took him everywhere! I would love to get Moxy if I won.

My stuffed animal was Sunny Bunny. It was a white easter bunny that you could buy at the Emporium in San Francisco when you spent maybe $50. My mom spent the $50 and I paid for Sunny Bunny. I distinctly remember picking him out of the stack of rabbits. I still have him, and love him as much as ever. I've handed him down to my kids, and he's the go to fix for bad dreams or when they're sick. I don't know what we would do without him.

I think Secret Mission Icebat or Babo are my favorite UglyDolls. I've seen them in stores, and immediately fell in love. (email on my blogger profile, hope that counts!)

I had a monkey named Brownie and he was actually pretty flat. I remember I took him to school for stuffed animal day and everyone made fun of him because he was flat. I was devastated but I gave Brownie even more love after that.

If I win, I would love Peaco!

I had a very ugly doll that my Aunt gave to me for a birthday present. She had a cloth body and a wooden head with long skinny arms and legs. To make it even worse, she had freckles and red pig tails. She was so ugly but I had to pretend to love her since it was a special gift. I named her Penelope and ended up loving that doll the most over time. Thanks for the memories.
My favorite ugly doll is GATO!

These dolls are so ugly they are adorable. I love the Paeco. I had a stuffed bear that my dad won for me over 40 years ago at the state fair. Today he is a little blind, a little less fuzzy, but my granddaughter absolutely adores him!

I had a styrofoam bean-stuffed doll named Louisey that I loved to death. She deteriorated, and I was really upset when I had to retire her.

If we won, I'd choose the Icebat doll because I live in Austin, home of the largest urban bat colony, and it would be a great representation of our hometown for my son.

I wanted a Cabbage Patch Doll so bad when I was little but, we couldn't afford one so my mom found a lady that made dolls that looked like Cabbage Patch Dolls, so she had me one made and I requested red hair and green eyes because thats what my little brother had and I loved him so much at the time. That was 1984 and I was 10yrs old, and I still have her today. If I were to win I would love Poe. Thank You!!

Oh, man I love these guys. Don't know if you ever heard of these, but I had a naugy when I was a kid. Made of naugahyde, it was the little mascot of the industry. We had a plant near our house. I miss it! My college roomies ruined it :-(.

I really love OX!! He reminds me the most of my naugy. BTW, naugy's were the first ugly doll!

I actually didn't get my favorite stuffed animal until I was 16 because I had a messed up childhood.
Anyway,at the time of my 16th birthday, I was living in a group home for abused kids and my therapist stopped by to wish me a happy birthday.
She handed me a package wrapped in The Little Mermaid wrapping paper and said "Here, you'll probably think this is lame, but I thought of you when I saw it."
It turned out to be a big, fat rotund plush bear with soft ,cream-colored fur.
Trying to be a cool, detached teenager, I said "No, it's not lame. I kind of like it."
That was such an understatement.
I loved that thing because no one had ever given me a teddy bear before.
I slept with it until college and I still have it. My kid plays with it now.
I stayed in touch with the therapist too, but as a friend, not a patient.

Anyway, back to Ugly Dolls.I'm madly in love with the bat, Poe.
He fits my Goth aesthetic to a tee.
Thank you for the contest.

It's funny you should ask this as my mother just recently came by and deposited a bunch of things from my childhood here at my house. I'd forgotten all about it, but in that pile was this knitted lamb that my grandmother had made for me (I think). It was loved to bits and I was hit rather fiercely with a bunch of old memories.

POE POE POE needs to come live with me!
